Former presidential candidate in the 2002 and 2007 general elections Nickson Kukubo has thrown his hat in the ring to contest for the same seat in 2022.

Kukubo who vied and came last in the two presidential elections insisted that he is the right person to take over and continue with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s development projects.

“I still believe I am the right person to be elected as the President of Kenya,” he said.

The 64-year-old, musician vowed to give ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto who are considered to be the front runners a run for their money.

He took a swipe at Raila Odinga’s Ksh 6,000 social welfare fund and William Ruto’s bottom-up economic model saying the two leaders were giving empty promises to dupe Kenyans into voting for them.

“Right now, they (Raila Odinga and William Ruto) are moving around giving promises that they won’t be able to accomplish. They are the same leaders who have failed to deliver to Kenyans,” he added.

The former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer plunged into active politics in 2001 when he formed and registered the Republican Party of Kenya.

Kukubo who unsuccessfully vied for President in the disputed 2007 General Election coming last with 5,927 votes is expected to officially launch his 2022 bid in February at the Bomas of Kenya.

While acknowledging that ODM presidential ticket contender Jimmy Wanjigi is a man to beat in the 2022 elections, Kukubo said that Kenya needs fresh crop of leaders like him.

“Aspirants like Jimmy Wanjigi and I can form the government. Kenyans should consider fresh people with fresh minds and ideas,” he said.

Others who have expressed their interest in the top seat include Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, Kiambu Bishop Zablon Karanja Mbugua, Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, and former Kimilili MP Mukhisa Kituyi.
