Deputy President William Ruto has hinted at his likely 2022 running mate being Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua.

During his tour of the Nyeri region on Saturday, November 4, William Ruto gave a strong hint that Gachagua is his preferred running mate from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

The Deputy President explained that the Mathira MP is one of his trusted allies, who he would wish to have close to his campaigns so as to win the presidency in 2022.

“I want to ask you for one favour, allow Kanda ya Wira (Rigathi Gachagua) Gachagua to accompany me to other parts of the country so that we can be able to win this seat. Free him so that he can engage in national politics,” William Ruto said.

Gachagua has proven to be a good candidate for Wiliam Ruto’s 2022 running mate in the manner in which he has protected the UDA Party from forming a coalition with other small parties from Mt Kenya.

Contrary to the wishes of other key players from the region such as Moses Kuria and Mwangi Kiunjuri, Gachagua has remained firm on having UDA as a single entity.

On the other hand, William Ruto seems to have identified his best pick from the region, leaving Raila Odinga’s team still juggling with whom to select as a running mate in 2022.

Reports have emerged that Odinga’s team is also keen on getting a running mate from the Mt Kenya region, with Martha Karua, Lee Kinyanjui, and Peter Kenneth being their center of focus.

The team is keen on having a running mate who will be the most preffered by Odinga himself.

We are for the view that if we want Raila Presidency to succeed and serve this country, we should allow him a free hand to go to Mt Kenya and look for whoever he has chemistry with,” Deputy Minority Chief Whip Maoka Maore said.
