As the clock ticks towards the 2022 elections, Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto has done 135 rallies in 30 days in his quest to succeed retiring president Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the month of October 2021, the 2022 presidential contender held 133 rallies in 20 counties in an all-out campaign.

For instance, on Thursday, November 4, the deputy president held seven meetings in Bungoma County, a region perceived to be Raila Odinga’s stronghold.

A day before, the former Agriculture Minister held eight meetings in Kiambu and Muranga counties. His meeting in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s turf happened just days after the first in command warned the Mt Kenya region not to elect thieves who will mess up with his legacy and that of his predecessor Mwai Kibaki.

On November 1, William Ruto held 10 record meetings in a single day in Raila Odinga’s stronghold of the Nyanza region.

During his visits, the deputy president has met with women, youths, leaders, congregations, and even commercial sex workers.

In almost every rally William Ruto has held, he has empowered some of the hustlers by either injecting cash in their businesses or commissioned infrastructure projects.

To make his work easier, the deputy president uses choppers to get to his destinations and a fleet of high-powered vehicles to criss-cross the markets and towns within the counties.

Despite all these rallies, Kieni MP Kanini Kega, a strong defender of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga told the Standard that William Ruto’s strategy will work against him.

Kega argued that sooner or later the deputy president will experience burnout for lack of a campaign strategy stating that for someone who comes from the community of long-distance runners, Ruto should have known the strategy to win a marathon.

“What he is running is a short race and he will eventually burn out. He is dancing himself lame before the main dance,

“In Kenyan politics, two to three months is the critical period to sustain a campaign. But we still have eight months and Ruto has already shown all his arsenal before we begin our campaigns with Raila (Odinga),” Kanini Kega said.
