As the clock ticks towards the General Election, 2022 presidential underdogs have joined hands to form the Muungano wa Wazalendo coalition.

The coalition brings together National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, and presidential hopeful Mukhisa Kituyi.

Speaking on Thursday, September 2, during the unveiling of Makueni Greenpark and ICT innovation Hub in Wote Makueni County, the leaders said they are welcoming other like-minded leaders who are ready to bring better leadership ideologies ahead of the 2022 presidential race.

As the clock ticks towards the General Election, 2022 presidential underdogs have joined hands to form Muungano wa Wazalendo coalition.

National Assembly speaker Justine Muturi said the new coalition will not seek endorsements from other leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta saying they will only seek Gods’ endorsement.

“We do not want to go and be told by someone else that you will be supported,” Muturi said.

It is understood that Kibwana, Kituyi, and Muturi have expressed their ambitions to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta who is expected to retire in August 2022.

Karua who has expressed her intention to vie for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat said the new coalition will ensure it plays a critical role in shaping the 2022 elections.

The new coalition joins the growing list of political partnerships typical of Kenya politics ahead of any General Election.

The Muungano wa Wazalendo coalition is expected to rival the known players like United Democratic Alliance which is associated with Deputy President William Ruto, the ODM, One Kenya Alliance as well as the Jubilee party.

Two weeks ago, former UNCTAD Secretary General Mukhisa Kituyi, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi announced plans to form a new coalition.

In a press statement on Tuesday, August 18, the National Assembly speaker said that he and the rest aim at a new style of politics that is neither chaotic nor divisive.

“We cannot change this country if we keep doing things the same way. That is why I am in this conversation with my friends Kibwana and Kituyi. We will expand this to be as inclusive as possible so that we can take this country forward,” he said.
