Agnes Kagure is a Nairobi businesswoman and philanthropist-turned politician. The 48-year-old is eyeing the city’s gubernatorial seat in the August 2022 General Election. This will be her very first time to venture into the murky world of politics.
Agnes Kagure launched her gubernatorial bid at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Friday, January 7, 2022.
Kagure said if elected as the fourth governor of Nairobi, she would transform it into a thriving hub of opportunities for all.
She pledged to create over one million jobs as she unveiled her five-point agenda for county 047.
“We have what it takes to transform our fortunes and turn our city into a haven of greater hope and shared prosperity,” she told her supporters.
Agnes Kagure Early life and education
Agnes Kagure was born in 1974 in Gitathii-ini village, Nyeri County to a humble family of eleven.
According to data on her website, she attended Tetu Girls Primary School before joining Kangubiri High School where she attained the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1993.
Kagure Kagure later joined Rajabhat University Chiang Mai in Thailand where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Agnes Kagure Career
Since Kagure’s parents were poor, Kagure moved to Nairobi in 1995 in search of greener pastures.
She worked as a house help before venturing into the insurance field.
Despite being aged 20, a determined Kagure applied to be an insurance salesperson after coming across a newspaper advert that capped the age limit for applicants at 25.
She secured a job as an insurance agent at Liberty Holdings Limited (previously American Life Insurance Company Kenya Ltd (ALICO).
Since she could not afford to pay rent as she was paid commissions, Kagure lived in Ruiru, one of the cheapest estates to live in then.
Agnes Kagiure then moved to Mathare North and later Dandora.
The Association of Kenya Insurers named her as the best salesperson for three years in a row.
Kagure rose through the ranks to become a senior agency manager by 2000.
Her duties as a unit manager involved recruiting and training agents.
In November 2004, she took part in the merger between ALICO and CFC bank into CFC Life Assurance Limited.
In 2005, she was named the new entity’s executive financial advisor and held the position until 2011 when she left.
Agnes Kagure Net worth
In a past interview, she revealed she made millions after working in the insurance industry for over 20 years.
“If you sell much, then commission becomes a massive blessing because 10% of KSh 10 million is Ksh 1 million. And 10% of one hundred million is KSh 10 million. That is how I made my millions during those two decades.
In 2011, Kagure reportedly purchased a piece of land in Ushirika Road, Karen worth KSh 100 million at the time. The land’s value has since appreciated to KSh 600 million but its ownership is being contested in court.
Her total net worth is yet to be revealed.
Insurance Consulting Group
With her passion for insurance, she founded her own company named Insurance Consulting Group (ICG).
Kagure Foundation, charity work
The Agnes Kagure Foundation empowers the youth and women through mentorship, business and employment incubation.
Kagure serves as its patron.
It is composed of over 3,100 volunteers who have donated over KSh 20 million to help more than 50,000 children.
