President Uhuru’s Jubilee Party and Raila Odinga’s ODM are mulling over a coalition to cement their March 2018 handshake.
Representatives from both parties have started holding talks after Raila and Uhuru’s request to transform the handshake into a formal coalition.
According to a report by the Daily Nation, the Jubilee and ODM officials have been meeting to agree on the presidential flagbearer in 2022 and how the government positions will be shared.
Yesterday, Jubilee’s Raphael Tuju, David Murathe and Maoko Maore met ODM’s Junet Mohammed and Edwin Sifuna at a hotel in Kiambu.
“This is just one of the many meetings we have had and are working on ways to formalize the handshake into a broad-based coalition for the sake of 2022,” Raphael Tuju told the Daily Nation.
On his part, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed said that the handshake coalition has reached a point of no return, and the next step is to cement Uhuru-Raila’s union.
“It is a foregone conclusion that ODM is going into 2022 with Jubilee as a team. We have reached the point of for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish till death do us part,” Junet Mohamed said.
Members of President Uhuru’s party have recently been calling for the resuscitation of the collapsing party.
Top party members such as Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and her Nakuru counterpart Lee Kinyanjui suggested that changes should be made in the party leadership.
When these calls came, both Raphael Tuju and David Murathe said that they are ready to leave the party leadership as they have already accomplished their mission.
