Analysis: Ruto beats Raila in number of campaign trips to Kenya’s 6 major voting regions

William Ruto has sensationally claimed that the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga is funded by corrupt people.

Recent presidential opinion polls have indicated that both UDA presidential flag bearer William Ruto and his main opponent Raila Odinga have a chance of winning the upcoming August 8 presidential polls.

Even though the two leading presidential contenders have been interchanging the lead, there remains a good percentage of undecided voters.

Several opinion polls have indicated that most of the undecided voters are from major voting bloc areas and this could be the reason behind the frequent visits by both Raila and Ruto.

An analysis of the campaign trail of both William Ruto and Raila Odinga shows that the Kenya Kwanza Alliance supremo has made more visits to the decisive voting blocs compared to the ODM leader.

The Mt Kenya region which according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) data has close to 6 million votes, is the most visited region by both presidential front runners William Ruto and Raila Odinga

For instance, the deputy president has made 36 trips to the region against Raila who has visited the region just 15 times even as the August 9, General Election draws closer.

Deputy President William Ruto also beat Raila Odinga in his Rift Valley region after frequenting the second-largest voting bloc 21 times against Raila’s 15 times.

It is however not clear why the former Eldoret North MP could make so many trips to a region that is traditionally believed to be his political bedrock.

The same trend was witnessed in the country’s capital city, Nairobi where Ruto has of today, Thursday, June 23, made 13 campaign rallies against Raila’s 10.

Despite making more political rallies than his bitter rival, Ruto is still behind Raila in the popularity rating if the recent surveys are anything to go by.

The former Agriculture Minister once again made more visits to the Western Kenya region which has for decades voted in favour of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The DP made 22 campaign trips to the region as compared to Raila who only visited the region 14 times.

The UDA presidential flag bearer again beat Raila in the Coast and lower Eastern region of Ukambani.

Data indicate that the DP has made 22 and 14 visits to Coast and Ukambani regions respectively as compared to Raila 10 and 2 respectively.
