Anne Kananu: Sonko vying for Mombasa governor is a joke

by Amos Khaemba

Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu has termed the move by his former boss, Mike Sonko to contest for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat as a prank.

Taking to Twitter on Friday, May 6, Kananu sarcastically wondered how Sonko can become Mombasa governor.

“Mike Sonko as Mombasa Governor. Is that supposed to be a joke?” Nairobi governor posed.

Kananu who was sworn in as Nairobi governor after the impeachment of Mike Sonko joins other leaders who have expressed varied opinions on the move by impeached governors to seek elective seats.

Sonko, who seeking to revive his political career following his impeachment in 2020 was recently given a direct ticket by the Wiper party where he will be deputized by Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo.

Commenting on the matter Makau Mutua who is the spokesperson to Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign secretariat says that it is against Chapter 6 of the constitution for impeached governors to run for any office.

“Everyone has a democratic right to run for office, but I draw the line at governors who’ve been impeached and removed from office, murderers/murder suspects, thieves, rapists, plunderers of public goods, land grabbers, criminals, and those in violation of Chapter Six. I say no!” Makau said on Twitter.

While issuing the nomination ticket to Sonko, former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka last week said that the former Nairobi Governor cannot be denied a ticket since he has not been charged with a crime.

“Sonko has not been charged with crimes against humanity. The only thing is he was impeached by the County Assembly of Nairobi and the decision was upheld by the Senate,” Kalonzo said.

On December 3, 2020, Sonko was impeached by 88 Nairobi MCAs of the County Assembly. This later proceeded to the Senate on December 17, 2020, and the senators upheld the resolution to remove him from office.

Sonko took the matter to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal upheld a decision by the High court that he was legally impeached in 2020
