Sleuths attached to the office of the Deputy President have arrested a 22-year-old musician impersonating Rigathi Gachagua.

Sugoi-based musician Collins Kipleting Serem alias Rengstar was arrested on Sunday, December 18, while at his hideout in Kamplemur village, Uasin Gishu County.

It is reported that the benga artist impersonated His Excellency Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and fraudulently obtained an unknown amount of money from unsuspecting Kenyans.

Detectives from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that Kipleting created a fake Facebook account bearing the Deputy President’s name and obtained money from unsuspecting netizens, allegedly meant for feeding Kenyans facing hunger.

“The suspect published a pay bill number connected to an account at Eldoret’s Standard Chartered bank and appealed to his over 14K followers to come together and raise funds for the victims of hunger, promising God’s blessings to those who would heed to the appeal,” DCI said in a statement.

Last month, the second in command revealed that the Kenya Kwanza government was in dire need of at least KSh 2 billion g to secure relief food for the drought-stricken counties countrywide.

Gachagua who was speaking on Thursday, November 3, at Mkomani Showground in Mombasa, urged Kenyans to contribute towards feeding starving Kenyans in drought-stricken areas.

“We appeal to Kenyans to give food so they can be given to those in need. Many Kenyans are suffering, and we are making this appeal to help them. No Kenyan should die from hunger when other Kenyans have surplus food,” the DP appealed.

To contribute towards the program, Gachagua said Kenyans can channel cash transfers through the two major cash transfer companies PAYBILL:10000 ACCOUNT NAME: DROUGHT.

In October 2022, more than four million Kenyans in 23 counties faced starvation due to the prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa. Twenty (20) counties in the Arid and Semi-Arid regions were seriously affected.
