COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has sensationally claimed that there is a possibility of President Uhuru Kenyatta contesting for the presidency in the future.
In an interview with KTN News on Saturday, April 30, Atwoli said that President Uhuru might come back as the Head of State after 10 years.
The outspoken COTU boss reiterated his past remarks that President Uhuru Kenyatta is too young to exit active politics.
“I am not saying that this will be his (Kenyatta’s) last Labour Day celebrations [as president]. He is too young to retire, he’s still a young person.
“He may be in retirement for ten years, or several years, and then make a comeback in politics and leadership,” Atwoli said.
While giving examples of other countries such as Singapore and Ghana, the COTU boss said a retired president can rule in subsequent years.
“We can’t rule out the possibility of Uhuru Kenyatta returning as president shortly,” he said.
Atwoli further revealed that President Uhuru will be the Chief guest during this year’s Labour day celebrations to be held at Nyayo stadium on Sunday, May 1 which will be his last under the Jubilee administration.
But under the current constitutional dispensation, President Uhuru Kenyatta can’t contest again in the future.
It is only possible if the current Constitution is amended to provide such scenarios where the
President can contest in any other position.
Atwoli one of the main advocates of the BBI constitutional amendment process has always said that President Uhuru is still young to retire.
At one point he called on the Mt Kenya residents to support BBI as it would have created many positions including that of the prime minister.
