by Enock Ndayala

Controversial Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has come out to explain why he hid nominated MP David Sankok’s crutches.

On Wednesday, December 22, members of the National Assembly were treated to a rare drama after Babu Owino temporarily hid crutches belonging to nominated lawmaker David Ole Sankok.

But on Thursday, December 23, Embakasi East MP defended his move saying he hid David Sanko’s crutches in good faith adding that the walking sticks were posing a security threat to the members.

He argued that the Tanga Tanga MPs who were opposed to the Political Parties Amendment Bill 2021 were debating with emotions and that they could easily use the crutches as a weapon to unleash violence on their Handshake partners.

“Tangatanga MPs were debating with emotions. They could have used Sonkok’s crutches as a weapon to unleash violence on us, I saw it prudent to hide them until they cool down,” Babu Owino said in a Tweet.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi, who was forced to halt Parliamentary proceedings after the crutches belonging to nominated MP David Sonko mysteriously, went missing.

Sankok who is a person living with a disability brought the issue to the attention of the deputy speaker who ordered the Sergeant at Arms to find Sankok’s missing crutches.

“The matter raised by Hon Sankok is very serious… What is surprising is that Hon Sankok you are seated there all the time. If you have lost your crutches, you should obviously have the person in mind who has taken your crutches,” Cheboi said.

It later emerged that the crutches had been hidden by the youthful legislator after he admitted that he was in possession of Sankok’s crutches but he jokingly apologized.

“Hon Speaker, Hon Sankok does not need the legs (crutches) as at now… I apologize,” Babu apologized to Sankok and they shared a light moment.
