Chaos as Raila, Ruto supporters clash at the burial of ex-MP John Serut

by Amos Khaemba

The burial of ex-MP John Serut turned chaotic after supporters of the ODM leader Raila Odinga and those of Deputy President William Ruto clashed.

The chaos between the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza supporters erupted on Saturday, March 5, after Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala fired a salvo at Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati.

While addressing mourners Malala had castigated the Bungoma governor for supporting the ODM leader telling Wangamati that he will fail in his reelection bid.

The vocal Kakamega senator had said that Azimio la Umoja-leaning leaders from the Western region are all brokers who cannot be trusted to chat the political direction of the region.

“You are not going to get any votes from the Western region, yesterday I saw Raila being accompanied by brokers who are not vying for any seat in his campaign trail…

“Eugene Wamalwa, Franci Atwoli, Wycliffe Oparanya, Mukhisa Kituyi, Cyrus Jirongo are not vying for any position…even this Wangamati is not vying because he has already lost,” Malala said.

Malala’s comments sparked fury among Wangamati’s supporters who attempted to eject Malala from the event.

At some point, mourners took to their heels as the youths attempted to bring down the main dent in their effort to flash Malala out.

Even the speech by Bungoma senator was temporarily halted as organizers tried to restore calm as things looked to be getting out of control.

Addressing the gathering after the order had been restored, Pamela Serut, widow to former Mt Elgon MP, expressed disappointment over the chaotic disruption of her husbands’ burial.

“Am embarrassed to be a Sabot, yesterday we were informed that some youths had been bought to cause disturbance…why do you people make yourself so cheap,” a visibly annoyed Ms. Serut said.

During the burial that took place at Kapsokwany High School, Azimio and Kenya Kwanza politics took center stage as politicians from both sides tried to outdo each other.
