Cherera: My photos with Raila, Joho have nothing to do with IEBC

by Enock Ndayala

Photos of IEBC vice chairman Juliana Cherera with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party presidential candidate Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho have been doing rounds on social media.

The photos surfaced after Cherera and the other four commissioners disowned the presidential results announced by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Monday, August 15.

In one of the photos trending online, ODM deputy party leader Hassan Joho is seen romantically feeding Cherera a cake, probably at someone’s birthday party.

Cherera’s closeness to Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leaders has elicited criticism, especially from Raila Odinga’s rival the Kenya Kwanza Alliance team.

The team has since questioned whether Cherera’s move to discredit William Ruto as the fifth president-elect was genuine.

This is further due to the fact that Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi, and Irene Cherop were appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta just months before the August 9, General Election.

According to the UDA team, Cherera and the other three commissioners appointed were picked majorly to assist his handshake partner Raila Odinga to clinch the presidency.

However, in a statement on Wednesday, August 17, Cherera, a former primary school teacher said that her earlier pictures with Raila Odinga and Governor Hassan Joho had nothing to do with IEBC.

Cherera, who once worked at the Mombasa County government further stated that the pictures were taken while discharging her previous duties and that they are not linked with the facts laid bare.

“My colleagues and I have indicated irregularities in the Presidential tallying process. It is not fair to personalize issues. Photos of me discharging duties in my previous position have nothing to do with the facts we have laid bare,” she said in a Tweet.
