Late billionaire Chris Kirubi designed the Mike Sonko and Polycarp Igathe short tenure at the Nairobi County leadership, it has emerged.
Speaking during Kirubi’s funeral service in Karen, former Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe revealed that it is the billionaire who crafted the Nairobi County leadership.
“It was Kirubi who designed the Igathe-Sonko ticket, and we were very glad with that design and he gave me to execute and we did not fail…” Igathe said.

However, Kirubi’s project did not last long as Polycarp Igathe resigned from the Deputy Governor position just months after taking the oath of office.
He cited failure to earn the trust of his boss Governor Mike Sonko to enable him to deliver services to Nairobians.
But it was the same Kirubi who enabled Mike Sonko’s brief stint at the Nairobi County leadership.
He came up with an idea to transfer Nairobi County Services, hence the formation of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services.
“When it was impossible to do business in Nairobi, it was Kirubi’s idea to make sure Nairobi is back to National Government,” Igathe recalled.
Through Kirubi’s initiative, some County Government services were transferred to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services headed by Mohammed Badi on March 18, 2020.
This birthed the Badi-Sonko leadership that did not also last long.
A month later, Anne Kananu, whom Sonko had named as his Deputy after the resignation of Igathe was sworn-in to office bringing an end to the Sonko-Igathe regime made by Kirubi.
