Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential bid has received a major boost after a section of church leaders threw their weight behind his candidature.

In a statement to the newsroom on Friday, May 6, the Federation of Evangelical Churches of Kenya said the Kenya Kwanza flag bearer understands the plight of the Kenyan churches.

“We are asking Kenyans to choose a leader who is close to us, a leader who understands our problems as a church,

“We will go to church and urge our people to vote for the deputy president as the president of Kenya in the August polls,” the leaders said.

The men of the clothe further endorsed Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru as William Ruto’s presidential running mate saying the time is ripe for women to ascend to the second-highest office in the land.

It is known that in the last five years, the former Eldoret North MP’s has been participating in unending church visits, and conducting harambees almost every Sunday.

His constant donations in church fundraisers have been a topic of concern even to his opponents including ODM leader Raila odinga who regularly questioned the source of his generous donations.

As Ruto visits churches to support the houses of God, Ida Odinga, the wife of ODM leader Raila Odinga who is William Ruto’s main challenger in the August 9, State House race is on the other side advocating for the closure of smaller churches.

Earlier on, Kivumbi.co.ke reported that Raila’s wife asked the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to abolish some churches that are not run by trained theologians.

Speaking on Sunday, January 30, during the launch of the Christian Book by Archbishop Emeritus Habbakuk Abogno, Ida urged NCCK to regulate the establishment of churches and shut down those that fail to meet the required standards.

“We want Kenyans to subscribe to religions that are formally registered. It is also important that we conduct training for all those who minister the word of God,” Ida remarked.
