COTU boss Francis Atwoli in heated online exchange with lawyer Ahmednassir

by Nderi Caren

COTU secretary-general Francis Atwoli was involved in a heated exchange of words with Lawyer Ahmednasir on Friday, May 28.

The jabs began when the city lawyer made negative comments about the naming of a road in Kileleshwa after the trade unionist.

“Total disgrace to name a street in Nairobi after Francis Atwoli. What are we telling poor workers he abandoned for the sake of my beloved Jubilee? He is a billionaire in a country where labour is enslaved by capital owners. He dines/wines with the rich/powerful and is disdainful of poor,” argued the flashy lawyer.

The tweet sparked a reaction from Atwoli, who in turn accused Ahmednasir of being a corrupt individual, making billions through fraud.

“My record speaks for itself. Unlike you, I am a very honest man, I work hard, I never engage in corrupt dealings, I speak my mind and I am not a billionaire (like you). My influence is out of the growth of the labour movement in Kenya. Kenyans with jobs are protected,” answered Atwoli.

The argument did not end here, as Grand Mulla called on the next government to probe Francis Atwoli’s’ unexplained’ wealth.

“The removal from office and prosection for unexplained wealth and assets of Mr. Francis Atwoli must be a top priority for any government that comes to power in August 2022. This is not negotiable!” he said.

In his defence, Atwoli said that the lawyer has a personal vendetta against him for blocking his corruption dealings.

“Majority of the problems Kenya is facing is because of lawyers like Ahmednasir who midwife corruption and impunity. My troubles with Ahmednasir began when I stopped him from accessing illegal pay at the National Bank of Kenya. I will always defend workers. I can’t do deals with swindlers,” he said.

The Nairobi County deputy governor Anne Kananu on Thursday unveiled the – Francis Atwoli road in Nairobi’s upmarket estate, Kileleshwa.
