Mary Kilobi Atwoli, the young wife to 78-year-old Central Organization of Trade Unions Secretary-General Francis Atwoli recently accompanied her husband to Ghana.

Atwoli, a common figure in Kenyan’s political space, was in Ghana on official duty as the boss of the Organization of African Trade Unions Unity (OATUU)

The outspoken trade unionist has been traveling on official duty along with his 35-year-old wife, who is a TV presenter at Kenya Television Network (KTN), regularly in the recent past.

It is on this particular trip to Ghana that Mary Kilobi came face to face with an irritating popular delicacy that made her to almost throw up.

In a video shared to her social media account, a visibly scared Kilobi has a plate of snails before her and she is even afraid of touching it, let alone eating.

Call it culture shock. Kilobi who hails from the Luhya community known for devouring chicken pushes away the plate of cooked snails.

“So guys I am in Accra Ghana at a restaurant called Asanka and guess what I have been served with, snail, I am even scared of touching it,

“My grandmother would collapse at the sight of this. Tembea uone maneno (indeed traveling the world helps you experience a lot),

“Apparently this is called Afua, a very popular local delicacy. Let me stick to ingokho (chicken),” said Kilobi as she pushed away the meal.

Indeed, giant snails are a popular delicacy in Ghana and some parts of Nigeria. They are hunted, cooked, and eaten without the shell. According to research, the snails are cooked for long hours to soften the meat and are served in pepper soup.
