Cracks emerge in Raila’s party over planned big meeting

by Enock Ndayala

The much anticipated National Delegates Convention (NDC) meeting by Raila’s party of ODM now hangs in the balance after billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi threatened to paralyse it.

Wanjigi, who is seeking to battle it out with ODM leader Raila Odinga for presidential flag bearer in a letter on Tuesday, February 8, raised concern over the omission of the nomination exercise for the party’s presidential candidate.

In a letter addressed to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Wanjigi argued that the omission of the nomination of the party’s presidential candidate might expose the party to the risk of not nominating its presidential candidate for the 2022 General Election.

The much anticipated National Delegates Convention (NDC) meeting by Raila’s party of ODM now hangs in balance after billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi threatened to paralyze the meeting.

“As an aspirant for the party’s presidential ticket, the omission of this critical agenda at the Convention, in my considered view, is unreasonable, smells of ulterior motive, and is meant to curtail my rights as a life member of the party to participate in the party’s affairs,” he said.

He further accused ODM party of deliberately inviting party delegates who only support Raila Odinga and no other personality.

“This is a fundamental violation of the constitution that has never been seen before and the same is only happening under your reign as the Secretary General of the Party and it is my demand that you forthwith stop disregarding and acting in breach of the party constitution,” Wanjigi told Sifuna.

Wanjigi’s comments come barely days after ODM spokesperson Edwin Sifuna said the party would hold its NDC at the Nyayo National Stadium on February 25 and 26.

These are the same dates coincidentally as those set by the Jubilee Party for its NDC.

The ODM life member further warned that, should the party fail to uphold its democratic tenets, then they (himself alongside other like-minded members) will not hesitate to go to court.
