Date set for launch of Raila Odinga’s presidential vehicle

by Amos Khaemba

With 167 days to the General Election, the Azimio la Umoja is set to be officially launched as a political vehicle for the ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

In an interview with The People Daily, Raila Odinga’s Presidential Campaign Board chair Ndiritu Muriithi revealed that the coalition will be launched on Sunday, February 27.

The Laikipia governor said the event which will bring together all political formations supporting Raila’s candidature will be held at Kamukunji grounds, Nairobi.

“This will be a big event. This will be the launch of Azimio after the NDCs. I would expect all the frontline leaders under the Azimio la Umoja to attend,” he said.

The former prime minister is expected to lead the event where all political parties supporting the Azimio La Umoja movement are expected to attend the historic event.

The attendance of President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Azimio La Umoja launch is not yet clear as Raila’s presidential campaign Chief Executive Elizabeth Meyo said it all depends on the president’s diary.

“It will be our first joint function as Azimio partners. We cannot confirm if the President will attend because his diary is managed elsewhere, but we look forward to hugely successful rallies,” she said.

The launch of Azimio will be preceded by several National Delegates Conferences (NDC) by parties supporting Raila’s presidential quest.

Already NARC party led by Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, Muungano party of Makueni Governo Kivutha Kibwana, DAP-K of Wafula Wamunyinyi have held their NDC and resolved to throw their weight behind the ODM leader.

Party of National Unity (PNU) associated led by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya is set to hold their delegates meeting on Thursday, February 24, to ratify a resolution to join Azimio.

The main parties behind Azimio la Umoja, ODM, and Jubilee, are set to hold their NDCs on Friday and Saturday respectively in which they will formally resolve to join Azimio and endorse Raila Odinga’s candidature.

The official launch of the Azimio la Umoja coalition will set in a clear form of engagement among constituent parties.
