David Makali: Ruto can win presidency without Kalonzo but Raila cannot

by Amos Khaemba

Political commentator David Makali has sensationally claimed that Deputy President William Ruto can will the August presidential election even without the support of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, unlike the ODM leader.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, February 19, Makali said the ODM leader Raila Odinga has little chance of winning the August presidential race without the support of Kalonzo Musyoka.

“Raila cannot win the August 9 presidential election without Kalonzo Musyoka but William Ruto can,” Makali stated.

According to Makali, Kalonzo Musyoka is the political supreme leader of the Ukambani region hence has a lot of sway on the region’s voting pattern.

The pollical analyst is of the opinion that If Raila does not bring Kalonzo to his corner, he will have a big mountain to climb in his quest for the presidency.

Makali opines that in the absence of Kalonzo, the deputy president stands high chances of winning the Ukambani voting bloc, even when Raila supported the three Ukambani governors.

“If you take, Kalonzo Musyoka out of the picture it is easier for William Ruto to win the Kamba vote over Raila Odinga, even with the three governors,” Makali stated.

Recently the former prime minister is banking on the support of Governor Charity Ngilu, Alfred Mutua, and Kivutha Kibwana to make strides in Kalonzo’s backyard.

Makali’s sentiments mirror that of Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdulahi who last year opined that Kalonzo Musyoka’s candidature will have a toll on ODM’s Raila Odinga’s fifth stab at the top seat but on the other hand it will favor Deputy President William Ruto.

“Like it or hate it…Kalonzo is the 2022 kingmaker! If runs for the presidency Raila’s chance drops to 20-25% while Ruto’s chance goes to 60-65%,” said Ahmednassir

Kalonzo supporting Raila

It is important to note that According to the IEBC new data records, the lower Eastern part of Kenya currently has 1,697,003 registered voters, of which Raila Odinga has been getting close to 1 million votes with the support f the Wiper leader.

From these numbers, it is clear that ODM leader Raila Odinga would suffer a setback were he to lose the Ukambani voting bloc that he got in 2013 and 2017.

The good news to the ODM leader is that Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly declared his willingness to join Azimio la Umoja.

But Speaking in Kisii County on Thursday, February 17, the Wiper leader gave the clearest hint of supporting Raila Odinga in the August 9 election.

“I have made it clear that we are talking to President Uhuru Kenyatta. You may be thinking that he is going away but he is busy strengthening Jubilee,

“Everybody knows the story of me and Raila, who doesn’t? 10 political years, we are talking to them, but I can clearly say those talks have not officially begun,” Kalonzo said in Kisii.
