Degree in 10 months: IEBC clears Wavinya Ndeti for the gubernatorial race

by Amos Khaemba

Machakos County gubernatorial candidate on the Wiper party ticket Wavinya Ndeti has been battling allegations of having a fake degree certificate.

In a petition before the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee, Wavinya was accused of fraudulently acquiring a degree in a record 10 months.

According to the letter shared earlier by Wavinya, she pursued a computer science degree from September 1994 to July 1995, a record period of only 10 months.

On Sunday, June 19, IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee dismissed the petition facing Wavinya paving the way for the contest in the Machakos gubernatorial race.

The tribunal ruled that it lacks jurisdiction to authenticate whether or not Ndeti’s degree was fake or genuine.

“Taking into consideration the subject complaints, cognizant of the evidence of the respective parties and the applicable law, the committee hereby holds and finds as follows,

“The committee lacks jurisdiction to determine the instant complaint. The returning officer discharged his mandate by the law. The instant complaint lacks merit. The complaint be and is hereby dismissed with no orders,” the tribunal ruled.

Speaking after the ruling, Wavinya expressed confidence in emerging victorious in the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

“I thank God, they just wanted to waste my time,” Ndeti said after the verdict was delivered.

Last week, Wavinya left Kenyans talking after she shared a letter from London South Bank University confirming she pursued a computer science degree from September 1994 to July 1995, a period of only 10 months before deleting it.

“We hope that this will adequately dispel the baseless propaganda being peddled by our clumsy competitors and silence naysayers,” Wavinya said in a Facebook post that she has already deleted.

But the petitioners had alleged that her academic certificates are questionable and inconsistent as there is no record of her ever registering in the UK.

The petitioner wondered how Wavinya would have managed to pursue a master’s degree before undertaking her undergraduate course.

According to documents provided by the Wiper politician indicates, she holds a Masters’s degree in Business systems analysis and design from the City University, London awarded on November 6, 1992.

She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computing Studies from South Bank University London awarded on July 18, 1995.
