Deputy President William Ruto is now facing up to a 5-year jail term at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, it has emerged.

According to the latest brief signed by the deputy prosecutor James Stewart and submitted on Monday, November 22, the deputy president who is eying to be the next president directly influenced witnesses that corrupted his case of crimes against humanity.

“The witness evidence establishes that the pattern of witness interference was conducted for the benefit of, and in coordination with William Samoei Ruto,” reads the brief.

The new information opens a new battle between the deputy president and the ICC which could earn him five years for every count.

Apart from the five-year jail term, Kivumbi.co.ke understands the former Agriculture Minister would be compelled to compensate post-election violence victims.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto were both charged with crimes against humanity following the violence that rocked the country after the heated 2007 General Election.

While President Uhuru’s case collapsed due to insufficient evidence that his counterpart was terminated due to interference of witnesses and political meddling with a warning that it could be revived.

By then, the court said there was no evidence that William Ruto was directly involved in corrupting witnesses.

But now the ICC claims to have evidence on the 2022 presidential hopeful which could put him in a fix.

In the new papers, the prosecution claims that the pattern of interference saw several witnesses withdraw their proof.

The deputy president who is traversing every corner of the country to popularise his 2022 presidential ambitions yesterday accused the Head of State of betraying him.

Ruto who was addressing residents in Kedowa in Kipkelion East and Belgut constituency said the problems he is facing are a result of Uhuru’s actions to mend fences with his long-term critic and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
