Detectives have launched a manhunt for a Kenya Kwanza politician believed to be the mastermind of the infamous Mulot SIM swap syndicate.

David Mutai alias Hillary Langat Matindwet who vied for the Nyangores Ward seat in Chepalungu Constituency, Bomet County in the August 9, General Election is accused of leading a syndicate that allegedly conned Rift Valley MP to the tune of KSh 941,000.

Comprehensive investigations by the detectives based at the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau has revealed that the little-known con-turned-politician work in cahoots with rogue banking officials posing as customer care agents from banks and then ask for a customer’s account number, PIN, as well as details of the last transaction on the targeted account.

“They then use the details to duplicate the victims’ account and after a successful SIM swap, the account is swept clean in a matter of seconds,

“Local financial institutions are the most targeted due to their inferior network segmentation systems, which expose their clients’ sensitive data to the fraudsters in case of cyber threats,” detectives said.

In a statement, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that detectives have repeatedly raided his home in Kapkwen but failed to arrest him because he would get tipped off by suspected accomplices who are in the police force.

Kivumbi.co.ke has learned that in 2006, Langat was arrested for allegedly swindling former Sports CS Wilson Langat to the tune of KSh 0.4 million.

Two years later, the UDA politician was accused of targeting former Permanent Secretary Josiah Sang who lost more than KSh 200,000.

In 2014, Langatwas charged in court for allegedly swindling Central Organization for Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli to the tune of KSh 100,000 claiming it was a contribution to offset funeral expenses for former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto’s daughter.
