DP Gachagua claims Raila demanded half of government before calling off protests

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has torn into Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s outbursts.

Last month, US senator Christopher Coon was in the country where he met Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Although not much detail of the meetings was made public, it was believed that the Delaware Senator was seeking for a truce between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza to ease political tension in the country.

But speaking during an interview on Inoro TV, the deputy president revealed Raila’s hard demands that would have seen him call off his weekly demonstrations.

He said the former Prime Minister demanded half of the cabinet Secretaries, ambassadorial, and PS slots so that he can call off the weekly mass protests.

The second in command however termed Raila’s demands as not genuine adding that the Kenya Kwanza government will not cede to dialogues when they fairly won the elections.

“The demands they are giving to warrant the protests are not genuine, all they want is to access power through the back door and we shall not entertain them,” Gachagua said.

The former Mathira Member of Parliament maintained that the Kenya Kwanza government will only give Raila an audience to discuss his retirement benefits adding that if he wants to get into power then he must wait for 2027.

“We can only engage in talks with Raila to see how the government can give him security details, several cars, and retirement perks and not to discuss an election that we fairly won. Let him wait for 2027,” Gachagua said.

Last week, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader announced the return of street protests and accused President William Ruto of insincerity in the proposed dialogue.

Raila said he will unveil a program for the second phase of nationwide mass action immediately after the holy month of Ramadhan, which is set to end on April 20.
