DP Gachagua proposes NYS to guard government offices ‘Toa polisi hapo’

by Enock Ndayala

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, December 15, presided over the official opening of the Nation-Huawei Job Fair 2022 in Nairobi County.

In his speech, the second in command heaped praises on the National Youth Service (NYS) officers.

The former Mathira MP said the NYS officers were disciplined enough to safeguard key government offices.

Gachagua claimed that private business owners were misusing the men in uniform by hiring them to guard their private entities.

He said police officers should be deployed to other duties which include fighting banditry and crime.

“I am a product of NYS. We were there in 1985 at Gilgil for a basic training course, and it’s a wonderful place,

“Police officers should go and deal with crime. NYS officers will man the premises at a fee, which will be paid directly to the government,” Gachagua said.

The Deputy President explained that the money generated in the NYS while manning government premises will be used in training more officers

“That money will be invested in training more National Youth Service personnel who will also serve the nations,” Gachagua added.

It is understood that this is not the first time Gachagua is making controversial statements about the police.

In June, the businessman-turned-politician sensationally said that police officer shall be escorting drunkards to their wives upon arrest when William Ruto becomes president.

On Wednesday, June 15, during a campaign rally in Kiambu County said the Kenya Kwanza government will initiate reforms in the police service to match their American counterpart.

“Polisi akikutana na wewe kama umekunywa chupa moja mbili ya kutafuta usingizi. Akikuweka kwa Landcruiser asikupeleke police station. Akupeleke mpaka nyumbani kwa bibi yako.” Gachagua said.

Loosely translated to, “Our police officers will work as the American ones. If they find you drunk as an old man, they will not take you to a cell. They’ll put you in their land rover and take you home to your wife.”
