Drama in Parliament as Babu Owino hides disabled MPs’ crutches

by Enock Ndayala

Parliamentary proceedings were on Wednesday, December 22, brought to a standstill after crutches belonging to nominated MP David Sankok went missing.

The House which had been reconvened for a special sitting to debate the controversial Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2021 turned chaotic where the Embakasi East MP Babu Owino used the occasion to hide disabled MP’s crutches.

The turn of events forced Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi to halt proceedings and ordered the Sergeant at Arms to find Sankok’s crutches after the lawmaker raised the issue in Parliament and reported them missing.

“The matter raised by Hon  Sankok is very serious… What is surprising is that Hon Sankok you are seated there all the time. If you have lost your crutches, you should obviously have the person in mind who has taken your crutches,” Cheboi said.

It later emerged that the crutches had been hidden by the youthful legislator after he admitted that he was in possession of Sankok’s walking crutches.

Cheboi called out Babu Owino for hiding the crutches and asked him to hand them over immediately.

The Deputy Speaker further directed the ODM legislator to apologize to the House for delaying an important sitting.

“Hon Babu Owino you should probably take the crutches back if you are the one who took them…” the speaker stated.

Although Babu was unwilling to apologize as he had already released Sanko’s crutches, he finally bowed to pressure from the Tanga Tanga MPs.

“Hon Speaker, Hon Sankok does not need the legs (crutches) as at now… I apologize,” Babu apologized to Sankok and they shared a light moment.

Yesterday, the handshake team led by Suna East MP Junet Mohammed accused Deputy President William Ruto of sponsoring chaos that rocked the National Assembly.

Addressing journalists outside Parliament precincts, Junet said the Tanga Tanga legislators did not come to do parliamentary work but were sent by their leader to wreak havoc in the House.
