Election officials found meeting candidates fired

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has sacked four election officials who were found holding a meeting with aspirants in Homa Bay County.

Homa Bay returning officer Fredrick Apopa said the four including a presiding officer, two deputy presiding officers, and a clerk were fired for meeting a parliamentary aspirant together with a Member of County Assembly (MCA) seeking elective seats in the August 9, General Election.

It was suspected that the officials were orchestrating to manipulate the outcome of the results in the elections slated for tomorrow.

In a report by the Daily Nation on Monday, August 8, Apopa said the officials committed an election offense by meetings aspirants.

“You cannot be in a meeting with politicians when the law requires you to be neutral,” he said.

The returning officer further stated that the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has launched investigations into the incident and that the four will face the full wrath of the law if found guilty.

“The outcome of the investigations will determine whether they will be charged. It will be up to the police and the office of the DPP to take legal action against them,” the IEBC official said.

Apopa urged Homa Bay county voters to remain cool stating that the election will go on as planned saying that the electoral agency has a system of filling a vacancy left by the dismissal of the four officials.

The meeting took place in Riat village, Kanyikela ward, Ndiwa constituency.

Their dismissal was reached after residents stormed the meeting demanding to know what the IEBC officials were discussing with aspirants.

The residents then frog matched the officials to the nearest police station- Ndhiwa police station.

“Residents frog-matched the four suspects before they were handed over to police,” a resident said.
