Jubilee Party leader Uhuru Kenyatta was in April 2022, appointed as the chairman of the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition party.

In the gazette notice dated April 13, 2022, Azimio presidential flag bearer and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga was named Party leader and Council member.

This saw the then-outgoing head of state endorse his handshake partner to succeed him saying that the former Prime Minister had the interests of Kenyans at heart.

However, according to the official presidential results announced by IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati, Raila lost the presidency after garnering 6.9 million votes just 200,000 away from William Ruto.

Speaking during an interview on K24, Former UDA chairman Kipruto Arap Kirwa said that allowing Rtd. President Uhuru Kenyatta to chair Azimio was the biggest problem.

Kirwa, who dumped Ruto for Raila said that already Raila was being blamed for the failures of Jubilee’s administration adding that anything that went wrong with Uhuru’s government was blamed on him.

“Raila had the misfortune of carrying an extra burden on which the government was blamed, and anything that went wrong with the government was blamed on him. Allowing President Uhuru to be part of Azimio was also a big mistake,” he said.

Following Raila’s fifth presidential loss to William Ruto, political analysts and some of the allies of Raila led by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino sensationally claimed that Uhuru played Raila in the August 9, elections.

However, in his latest media address, veteran politician Raila Odinga refuted claims that his handshake partner was working to hand over power to his deputy William Ruto.

“Uhuru Kenyatta had said that the wanted a free and fair election and that his government would not interfere with it. What happened is known to the public,” Odinga stated.
