The Kenyan government has increased the monthly pension of former first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

Local dailies on Tuesday, April 11, reported that the Kenya Kwanza government increased the monthly pension of Mama Ngina Kenyatta by a whooping KSh 111,000.

As such, Rtd. President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother will now be earning a monthly pension of KSh 679,800 down from KSh 568,218.

The increase in pension is in line with the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act which states that the spouse of a retired or sitting president shall be entitled to a 50 percent monthly pension of the current salary paid to a head of state.

“Spouse benefits upon the death of a serving president or of a retired president who is in receipt of or who is entitled to a pension under this Act, his surviving spouse shall be entitled to benefits amounting to 50 percent of such pension,” the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act states.

The monthly payment of Mama Ngina, 90, has placed the former First Lady in a small and exclusive club that includes former top public officials who set back taxpayers more than KSh 500 million every month to keep them comfortable in retirement.

The matriarch of the Kenyatta family is considered one of Africa’s wealthiest families, with its vast business interests spanning transport, insurance, hotels, farming, land ownership, and media in Kenya.

The increase in Mama Ngina Kenyatta’s monthly pension comes at a time when the Kenya Kwanza government has failed to meet some of its financial obligations.

For instance, the new administration has not paid its civil servants their salaries, making life unbearable not only to hustlers but to state officials as well.
