Former Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba joins Ruto’s campaign team

by Amos Khaemba

Deputy President William Ruto has appointed Foreign Affairs Chief Administration Secretary Ababu Namwamba to his Presidential Campaign Secretariat ahead of the August 9 presidential elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, February 9, DP Ruto appointed Namwamba as the Head of International Relations in his campaign team.

Ruto said that the former ODM secretary general has a lot of experience as a leader, lawyer, and politician.

“We have worked closely with Ababu over the past 10 years on many fronts and I have come to value his leadership, experience, and empathy,

“It is because of those qualities that I could not be more grateful to have him on our campaign team,” Ruto said in the statement.

“With his considerable diplomatic talents, deep knowledge of the continent, strong network in the global stage, and unwavering determination, I am confident in his role,” Ruto added.

The move by the deputy president comes after Namwamba in an interview with The Star Newspaper on Friday, January 14, said that he would not be vying for any elective position in the August 9 General Election.

The former Budalangi MP said he would channel his efforts in campaigning to ensure Deputy President William Ruto wins the presidency.

“I am not running for any political office. I am going to be working very closely with Ruto to deliver his presidency. I believe he offers this country a fresh beginning,” Namwamba said.

Since joining United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party late last year, there have been speculations that Namwamba will be contesting for the Busia gubernatorial seat on a UDA ticket.

Last week, Namwamba also ruled out suggestions of him contesting for the Budalangi parliamentary seat that he lost to Raphael Wanjala of ODM.

“I have already announced that the Budalang’i parliamentary seat is one shoe that my foot no longer fits. I’m now an international figure and I can’t play in amateur leagues again. I have already declared that I will not contest for any political seat during the August general election,” he said.
