Former CJ Willy Mutunga to bring deported lawyer Miguna Miguna from Canada

by Nderi Caren

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said he will be flying to Canada to accompany deported Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna back to Kenya.

On November 16, 2021, Miguna Miguna will be making his third attempt to fly back to Kenya after his deportation in January 2018.

Having proven to be a trip filled with hurdles before, Mutunga has asked for backup in efforts to get Miguna back to Kenya.

“My Decision After careful reflection and following broad consultations with lawyers, human rights and justice defenders, progressive politicians, and Miguna himself,

“I have decided to travel to Toronto, Canada, to accompany Miguna on his flight back to his motherland on 16 November 2021,

“I am also seeking out Kenyan journalists who will accompany me on this historic journey,” Willy Mutunga wrote in a statement.

Willy Mutunga further explained the reasons why he has decided to get involved in the difficult task of having Miguna back to Kenya.

“The first is because of the continued, flagrant and reprehensible defiance of the Government of Kenya, its agencies, and senior officials, against the numerous valid court orders in favour of Miguna.

The second reason why I have decided to undertake this journey is to support and defend the independence of our judiciary, its authority, and the people’s confidence in it,” he stated.

Miguna Miguna’s last attempt to fly back to Kenya was in January 2020.

After successfully traveling from Canada to Germany, lawyer Miguna Miguna was blocked from boarding a Kenyan-bound flight at Berlin Airport, Germany.

While at the airport, Miguna Miguna was told that the Kenyan government had instructed German authorities not to allow him to board any Kenyan-bound flight.

“In fact, the Kenya Government has demanded that Lufthansa must refund my fare. They have demanded that Lufthansa should not fly me into any other African country, either,” said Miguna.

The vocal lawyer was deported to Canada in February 2018, after administering an oath of office to Raila Odinga.

At the presence of Miguna and other lawyers, Raila was sworn in as the people’s president in January 2018.

This was after losing the presidency to Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 General Election and repeat elections.

He made his first attempt to return to Kenya in March 2020.
