Former governors take precaution after Raila Odinga tested positive for COVID-19

Two former county chiefs have confirmed taking precautionary measures after interacting with ODM leader Raila Odinga who tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

Evans Kidero, former governor of Nairobi county said he would self-isolate since he was with Raila on the campaign trail in Malindi and Mombasa popularising the BBI bill.

“I spent four days with (Raila Odinga) in Malindi and Mombasa last weekend where we drummed up support for BBI,” he said.

Kivumbi.co.ke understands these rallies were the last major political engagements the ODM leader was involved in prior to checking into a Nairobi hospital complaining of fatigue.

While in Mombasa, Raila was also seen at a rally with Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho alongside several MPs from the county.

Kidero also said he has cancelled all his campaign activities in Homa Bay, where he is angling to vie for the gubernatorial seat in 2022.

Besides Kidero, former Kiambu governor William Kabogo also said he met with Raila a few days before the opposition leader tested positive for COVID-19.

“I met Raila on Monday March 8 at 11 am at his Jaramogi foundation office. Will test tomorrow. Get well soon my friend. In God we trust,” he said.

News of Raila Odinga testing positive also came barely hours before President Uhuru Kenyatta addresses the nation following expiry of 3-month COVID-19 containment measures.

It remains to be seen what more measures shall be introduced considering COVID-19 infection rate has hit its highest rate ever since the first case was reported in Kenya in early 2020.

According to the health ministry corona tracking website, Kenya has confirmed 111,185 COVID-19 cases so far with 87,994 recoveries and 1,899 deaths as of March 11, 2021.
