Gladys Wanga: What does William Ruto stand for as a leader?

by Enock Ndayala

Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga has challenged Deputy President William Ruto footsoldiers to publicly tell Kenyans what he stands for that defines him as a suitable presidential candidate.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, February 2, Wanga said the deputy president has nothing outstanding that Kenyans can attribute to him and as such he is not qualified to be president, unlike Raila Odinga.

“I want to ask Alice (Wahome, the Kandara MP), what does William Ruto stand for? What has he stood for in all his years of public service?

“The one thing that if somebody mentions the name of William Ruto, it will be probably corruption and wheelbarrow,” she said.

While questioning the promises the deputy president made to Kenyans prior to the 2013and 2017 elections, Wanga said Ruto has a record of broken promises.

She further took a swipe at William Ruto’s bottom-up economic model saying that it does not put into consideration all segments of our economy.

“You cannot grow our economy with a policy that segments only a certain part of that economy,” the legislator said.

Wanga who has expressed her ambitions for Homa Bay gubernatorial seat in the upcoming General Election said William Ruto cannot be compared to ODM leader Raila Odinga who she said demonstrably keeps his promises.

The outspoken legislator said despite being out of the government, the former prime minister has not only fought devolution but has also ensured that the devolution has been realized across the counties.

“Raila Odinga has stood for gender equality, he has promoted women in his own party and even when he was in the grand coalition with retired president Mwai Kibaki, he ensured there was free primary education, did rural electrification as well as roads,” Wanga said.

She said the opposition leader is the best person to succeed outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta because he fulfills his promises.
