Governor Anyang Nyong’o suspends Azimio protests in Kisumu

by Enock Ndayala

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has suspended the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition protests against President William Ruto.

Kisumu, which is considered to be the political bedrock of the opposition leader Raila Odinga had fully embraced the Monday and Thursday anti-government demos over the surging cost of living.

But in a stamen on Wednesday, March 29, the ODM governor made it clear that his county has already delivered various issues affecting Kisumu residents to the national government.

Nyongo said the decision comes after consultations between the Azimio La Umoja Leadership and the County Executive Committee.

“After detailed consultations with the Azimio National leadership and the County Executive Committee (the cabinet), I wish to (announce) that all public demonstrations within Kisumu County have, from today, been suspended indefinitely so that we can join the demonstrations in Nairobi,” Nyong’o stated.

He, however, declared that Kisumu remains committed to pushing for the lowering of the cost of living and blocking the Kenya Kwanza regime from handpicking a partisan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

“The people of Kisumu remain committed to the aspirations of Azimio la Umoja and its campaign for a better Kenya,” he added.

His announcement comes just a day after the internal security department made changes to the Nyanza Regional police boss.

In the changes that were effected on Monday, March 27, Former Eastern Regional police commander Noah Mwivanda replaced Nyanza Regional Police Commander Karanja Muirurui.

It was widely reported that Muiruri was recalled for being too lenient to Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga’s protestors.

The suspension further comes at a time when the local dailies reported that one person was shot dead during a violent clash between police and protesters in Kisumu.
