Governor Waiguru links case facing her to politics

by Amos Khaemba

Kiranyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has blasted the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission saying their intention to charge her for corruption is a political witch-hunt.

Taking to her social media pages on Friday, March 4, Waiguru said recommendations by EACC is only meant to punish her for teaming up with Deputy President William Ruto

“This recommendation by EACC is pure politics intended to punish my move to UDA and to send a message to would-be defectors as to the false charges that await them if they dare (move to UDA).” Waiguru wrote on Facebook.

The governor defended herself of having done nothing wrong, saying the issue in question relates to the accounting for imprest.

The Ruto ally accused EACC of selective prosecution of corruption cases, saying many government officials leaning towards the yet-to be- formed Azimio la Umoja Coalition are never harassed by EACC.

“There is no allegation that money was lost only that it was accounted for late.  Meanwhile, those who disappeared with billions meant for sick people continue to walk the streets unmoved because they belong to certain political affiliations,” Waiguru added.

The sentiments by Governor Waiguru come after EACC in its quarterly report recommended to the DPP to have her charged for receiving imprests for non-existent travels.

The authority said she received imprests amounting to Sh10.6 million for trips that were non-existent or not official.

“Investigations found that many of the said officials were verbally nominated to join the governor on the said trips.

“Investigations further established that the governor, chief of staff, and gender executive were granted imprests for trips while holding outstanding imprests,” the report said.

The report further said that the commission examined 12 international trips and established that there were documents indicating that the governor was invited for the travels.
