Hassan Joho first ventured into politics in 2004 when he was elected the Liberal Democratic Party chair Kisauni branch.

He held the position between 2006 and 2007 when he made a stab at the Kisauni constituency parliamentary seat in the General Election.

After the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution that created county governments, Hassan Joho vied for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the 2013 General Election winning by 132,583 votes.

His closest challenger Suleiman Shahbal of the Jubilee Party, was second with 94,905 votes.

In the 2017 General Election, Joho was reelected Mombasa governor on an ODM ticket.

He garnered 220, 576 votes against Jubilee’s Suleiman Shabhal’s 69,322 votes. Hassan Omar, who ran on a Wiper ticket, came a distant third with 43,672 votes.

Joho was a fierce critic of the Jubilee government until March 2018, when his party leader Raila  Amollo Odinga ceased hostilities with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

After the highly publicized handshake, Joho changed tune and started praising the Jubilee administration.

He was one of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) proponents that the court declared unconstitutional, null and void.

2022 General Election

Joho is deemed the political kingpin of the coastal region and has been consolidating his support as he seeks the ODM ticket for the presidency.

He officially announced his candidature in January 2021, saying he had the requisite experience to lead the country.

The county boss asked ODM leader Raila Odinga to back him, arguing he had rallied behind him for over a decade.

His announcement came after Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, the ODM deputy party leader, declared his interest in succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In June, Murang’a tycoon Jimmy Wanjigi joined the race to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta. He vowed to challenge Joho, Oparanya and Raila for the ODM ticket.
