How Raila, Kalonzo could battle for Azimio la Umoja presidential ticket

by Enock Ndayala
Kalonzo Musyoka has sensationally claimed that Raila will be defeated in the August polls if he does not name him his running mate.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has finally agreed to support Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka‘s 2022 state house bid but on one condition.

Kalonzo has insisted that he will only work with the former prime minister if he honors their 2017 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which required the opposition chief to support his (Kalonzo’s) 2022 bid irrespective of the 2017 presidential outcome.

However, in what appears to be the final offer to the Wiper leader, Raila has invited the former vice president for a free and fair nomination exercise where the winner will face off with Deputy President William Ruto at the ballot in August 9.

According to Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign spokesperson Makau Mutua, all parties supporting the yet-to-be registered Azimio la Umoja coalition are set to hold the national delegates conference on March 12 where the running mate is also expected to be unveiled.

Mutua revealed that each party will bring 20 delegates for the purposes of voting for the coalition’s flag bearer in an exercise where any other presidential hopeful under the Azimio Umbrella is free to contest to fly the coalition’s flag in the August 9, elections.

According to Mutua, Raila is willing to support his former National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principal for the 2022 presidential seat only if he will emerge the winner at the primaries.

“We have an outline of what the process will look like but it’s still a work in progress. At this moment, what we can say is that the parties that are in Azimio will meet at a delegate’s conference where each party will bring 20 members for the purpose of selecting the Azimio la Umoja candidate,” Mutua said.

However, it is crystal clear that Raila will defeat Kalonzo at the primaries since President Uhuru Kenyatta’s handshake partner has received the backing of a majority of political parties under the Azimio umbrella.
