On Tuesday, July 27, Deputy President William Ruto arrived at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) for the 2022 presidential debate.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) flag bearer was accompanied by his wife Rachel Ruto, mama mboga (vegetable vendor), and a Boda boda representative as well as several Kenya Kwanza Alliance politicians.

The second in command debated solely for more than 90 minutes after the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party flag bearer Raila Odinga boycotted the debate.

Just after the debate, a video of Hussein Mohamed, William Ruto’s Director of communications pushing aside Pauline Waithera- the mama mboga who had accompanied Ruto to prove that his campaign is built around uplifiting the welfare of economically forgotten Kenyans- after the presidential debate surfaced online.

In the 12-second long video, Waithera who was seen escorting the ‘Chief Hustler’ out of the presidential debate is seen being pushed away to usher in William Ruto’s wife Rachael Ruto to walk beside her husband.

Many Kenyans found the video ironic given Ruto has been advocating for the empowerment of hustlers through his bottom-up economic model yet he cannot freely mingle with them.

Kivumbi.co.ke understands that this is not the first time Waithera, who seconded William Ruto’s presidential candidature is accompanying the deputy president.

Waithera accompanied the UDA party presidential candidate to Bomas of Kenya on June 4 when he appeared before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) seeking clearance to run for Presidency.

According to the 2022 presidential front runner William Ruto, Waithera, who hails from Kiambu County, has been part of his campaign team and represents the interests of mama mboga.

Ruto earlier said that Waithera was consulted during the creation of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance manifesto.

“I met this great woman (Pauline Waithera) from Kiambu Market in Kangangi where I interacted with her in one of our economic forums discussing the economy of every county,” revealed the Deputy President.
