IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati’s wife asks Kenyan to pray for husband

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati’s wife, Mary Chebukati has appealed to Kenyans to pray for her husband ahead of the August 9, elections.

Speaking during her mother’s burial on Saturday, July 16, Mary Chebukati said her husband, who is also the Presidential Returning officer, was more concerned about following the law.

“Please pray for our family, especially during the electioneering period. All I know is my husband wants to follow the law,” she said at a gathering.

In a heartwarming speech, Mary hilariously disclosed that the IEBC chairman has put the national interest ahead of his family and that the family sees him on TV more than they see him at home.

“We see him on TV more than we see him at home because of his job. Even now, I thank him for setting aside his national duties to come and mourn with us,” she noted.

Chebukati’s wife, who did not divulge much detail, revealed that their three children were deeply affected by the 2017 General Election but have since grown stronger.

“Our children were deeply affected by the last elections exercise but now they are strong, and so is Chebukati. We always pray for God’s wisdom to guide him as he serves the nation,” she added.

Her appeal to the nation comes at a time when the electoral body is under pressure from different players to deliver free, fair, and credible elections whose results can be verified.

Chebukati has served as IEBC chair since 2017 and is set to supervise his second general election.

Last week, the IEBC boss cautioned Kenyans against profiling the commission’s staff along ethnic lines, noting that a section of his staff is now living in fear.

“It is actually very sad that at this point in time we have people who are hell-bent on trying to profile IEBC staff,” Chebukai lamented.
