IEBC comments on Johnson Sakaja’s controversial degree certificate

by Enock Ndayala

There was high speculation that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not clear Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja over claims that he possesses fake academic papers.

On Tuesday, June 7, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared the youth politician to contest for Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

While Sakaja’s clearance was expected to bring to an end the debate surrounding his academic qualification, the move has since opened a new discussion.

On Friday, June 10, a latter emerged online purportedly written by the Wafula Chebukati-led commission in which it questioned Sakaja’s academic credential.

However, the polls agency has flagged as ‘Fake’ a letter purportedly written by the commission to the Commission Team University in Uganda over Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja’s academic credentials.

IEBC denied being the authors of the letter that contained a forged signature of its chairperson, Wafula Chebukati.

This was after it later emerged that a degree certificate Sakaja used for his clearance was presumed to have been obtained from a university in the neighboring country Uganda.

On Thursday, June 9, blogger Robert Alai shared documents including a degree certificate from a University in Uganda by the name Team University.

The Team University documents stated that Sakaja graduated with second class honors with a Bachelor of Science in Management in October 2016.

Alai also attached a letter from Commission for University Education(CUE) in which Sakaja’s degree was certified as being legitimate.

“I hereby confirm that Team University is a recognized institution in Uganda. The qualification awarded by the said institution is also recognized in Uganda mad by convention in Kenya” Commission for University Education said while recognizing Sakaja’s degree.

Sakaja is eying the Nairobi gubernatorial seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party that is heavily linked to 2022 presidential front runner William Ruto.

He is expected to square it out with business mogul Polycarp of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party.
