IEBC commissioner: Most politicians we clear are academic dwarfs

by Enock Ndayala

The Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set a minimum academic threshold for Kenyans seeking to contest various elective seats in the August 9, elections.

For instance, just like the gubernatorial aspirants, those seeking to contest for the presidency must have a degree from a University recognized in Kenya.

This has seen most of those who were seeking elective seats being barred from contesting while others battle with court cases over the authenticity of the academic certificates.

On Thursday, July 7, IEBC Commissioner Abdi Guliye cast doubts on politicians’ level of intelligence saying most of them are not academically gifted.

Speaking during an IEBC press briefing, Guliye claimed that based on his review of the academic certifications submitted by the majority of politicians, the majority are average to below average.

“When we clear the candidates they are at the bottom ladder of their IQ levels if you look at their certificates. Those who have gone to University have passes and second class lower,” Guliye said.

He faulted Kenyans for glorifying politicians saying that the trend has made everyone in the country have the desire to be a politician yet they have nothing special.

The IEBC commissioner further revealed that most politicians were not as intelligent as they sound on the podium

“We have glorified politicians to the extent that everybody wants to be a politician,” Guliye added.

He further stated that politicians could not be trusted, explaining that to the public, they demand free and fair elections but secretly reach out asking to be favoured.

“Politicians are very cunning. During the day, they demand a fair election but at night come seeking to be favoured. We’re forced to live in isolation because when you are spotted with any politician, it is said you are trying to help them,” added the commissioner.
