IEBC in crisis meeting over Raila, Ruto presidential running mates

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned presidential front runners William Ruto and Raila Odinga to discuss the running mate deadline.

This was after Raila’s team and that of Deputy President William Ruto protested the IEBC deadline requiring them to present the names of their running mates by Thursday, April 28.

However, on Monday, April 25, the commission said it will be meeting the presidential front runners on Tuesday, April 26, to resolve the standoff surrounding the running mates.

“We have asked officials leading the presidential teams of all candidates to come to the meeting so that we can agree on this matter,” one of the commissioners told the Star Newspaper.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati had on Monday, April 25, expected to meet officials of the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition party tasked with finding Raila’s running mate but the meeting was pushed back due to engagements occasioned by the demise of Mwai Kibaki.

“Due to engagements occasioned by the demise of the third president of the Republic of Kenya Mwai Kibaki, the commission hereby defers the meeting to April 26, 2022, at 10 am in the commission’s boardroom,” IEBC said in a statement.

Last week, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta sanctioned the formation of a special committee as the search for ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential running mate intensifies.

Addressing journalists after the Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya Coalition party meeting chaired by the president on Thursday, April 21, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed revealed that the advisory committee will be tasked to identify a suitable number two for Raila.

“Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition council also resolved to appoint an advisory panel to recommend to the presidential candidate suitable candidates for nomination as the deputy presidential candidate,” Junet said.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, his Narc Kenya counterpart Martha Karua, Mombasa governor Hassan Joho, and Agriculture CS Peter Munya are among the front runners for Raila’s running mates.
