The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has addressed the Jubilee Party’s concerns over the results of the Kiambaa mini poll.
The Chebukati-led commission has denied claims by the ruling Party that it acted in favour of the mini poll’s winner and United Democratic Party candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku.
In a statement seen by Kivumbi.co.ke, the IEBC Chairman rebuked claims by Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamataangi, who claimed that candidates got the same number of votes in different polling stations.
The commission said that the Jubilee Party’s concerns should be addressed in a legal manner while providing the public access to form 35As from the Kiambaa mini poll.
“For purposes of setting the record straight, the Commission has uploaded the result forms for the Kiambaa Member of National Assembly by-election on the portal for reference by members of the public,
“The Commission wishes to state that the return of a similar number of votes in different polling stations in respect of a candidate, during elections is purely coincidental,” read part of the statement from Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
The commission further warned politicians against spreading such propaganda and false accusations in ahead of the 2022 General Election.
“The attacks on the Commission are not only denting its image but are also setting a bad precedence ahead of the 2022 General Election.”
The statement from IEBC is a result of Jubilee Party’s concerns after the loss of its candidate Kariri Njama in the July 15 Kiambaa mini poll.
Other than Kimani Wa Matangi, Jubilee Party officials have also protested their loss in the just-completed polls.
Jubilee Vice Chairperson David Murathe said that they have evidence to support their call for a recount of the votes.
“We are not satisfied with what IEBC did to our candidate. When you are not satisfied with the results and you want a recount, they cannot refuse to give you a recount,” he said.
This protest has rendered Jubilee Party a laughing stock of their UDA opponents.
