Impeached Wajir governor defiantly attends Madaraka day celebration

Former Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi, who was impeached by the Senate made a surprise appearance at the Madaraka Day celebrations.

The county boss was among the VIP’s who graced the June 1st event held at the Jomo Kenyatta International stadium in Kisumu.

It baffles many how the impeached Governor got a VIP seat at the event which was meant for invites only.

A week ago, Mohamed Abdi also attended a Council of Governors meeting despite Ahmed Ali Mukhtar having taken over as the new County boss.

In the meeting, the other Governors warmed up to Abdi, defending his impeachment.

They openly showed that they still want him to be one of them.

“The council notes the orders by the High Court that reaffirmed the position of Wajir Governor Mohamed Mohamud. His case is to be affirmed by the Court of Appeal. The Constitution is clear. Violations warranting an impeachment must be weighty. The issue in Wajir was very light,” Embu Governor Martin Wambora said.

Clearly, Mohammed Abdi is not stepping down despite his deputy Ahmed Mukhtar having been sworn in as the Governor.

Before Mukhtar’s swearing in ceremony, Mohammed Abdi had obtained a court order barring his junior from assuming office.

However, the County Assembly had already sworn in a new governor in a function presided over by Justice Said Chitembwe.

Governor Abdi has since made it clear that he is still in charge of the County.

He said that some leaders in Wajir had orchestrated his unlawful removal from office.

“I’ am perturbed by the behaviour of some Wajir leaders who orchestrated an illegal swearing-in to remove a serving governor from office,” said Mohammed Abdi.
