In December 2022, Kenya’s oldest party KANU suspended Nick Salat as its Secretary General over what the party termed as gross misconduct and a violation of the party constitution.

In a letter addressed to the party’s longest-serving Secretary General, party chairman Gideon Moi barred Salat from carrying out any duties of the party.

“You are hereby suspended forthwith from carrying out and/ or performing your duties as the party’s secretary general pending the determination of the disciplinary proceedings,” read part of Moi’s letter to Salat.

Following his fallout with the party over his close association with Kenya’s Kwanza government, Salat who has been in political cold for 15 years finally resigned.

He termed his dismissal as unlawful adding that it was against the rules of natural justice.

In a letter dated Friday, February 17, addressed to the party, and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), the politician said his resignation is effective today.

“Pursuant to Section 14 of the Political Parties Act, I Nicholas Salat have resigned from the KANU party and therefore disengage from and dissociate myself from the party except in situations where the law so permits after this notice

“It is my position that my purported dismissal from the position of Secretary General as communicated through the press was unlawful and against the laws of natural justice,” he said.

His resignation comes just days after the politician failed to appear before the National Disciplinary Committee investigating his conduct.

This was after the politician declared his intentions to join President William Ruto’s UDA Party.

“I am now in the government and I have suffered outside for a long time,

“I know you will be President for 10 years. I saw the great reception that you were accorded in Nyanza and I cannot be left behind. Wherever you are, I will be. I have suffered too long, please accept me back,” Salat said.
