Infotrack deletes polls placing Gachagua ahead of Karua in debate

by Enock Ndayala

On Tuesday, July 19, William Ruto’s 2022 presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua faced off with Martha Karua in the presidential running mate debate.

During the debate, held at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua appeared to surprise many with his debating skills, especially considering his outrageous statements on the campaign trail.

The first-time MP’s debating skills saw him rank best in most random exit opinion polls conducted shortly after the debate ended.

Infotrack was one of the many institutions, that conducted exit polls on social media, that placed Gachagua much ahead of Karua in terms of their performance.

About 61% of the more than 51,000 Kenyans on Twitter that participated in the Infotrack poll said Rigathi Gachagua was the better performer in the interview.

According to the provisional results seen by Kivumbi.co.ke, of the total votes, Gachagua was leading with 61.8 percent; Karua came a distant second with 29.1 percent, Wamae of Roots party with 8.4 percent while Ruth of Agano party came last with 0.6 percent.

Several hours later, the tweet was deleted with claims the action was informed by the realisation there were twitter robots participating in the poll.

The action to delete the tweet however elicited sharp reactions from netizens especially those allied to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance political formation.

“That Infotrak limited deleted these results from their handle goes to confirm their fake and vague Infotrak polls. Why get embarrassed with the reality that goes against what you have all along been parroting against Gachagua, and others. You can’t cage the truth for too long,” said Cofek Secretary General Stephen Muturo.
