Inside plan to reintroduce Prime Minister’s post after collapse of BBI

Deputy President William Ruto blasted President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga for running down the economy.

After the collapse of BBI, a section of Members of Parliament have resuscitated plans to introduce the position of Prime Minister in Kenya.

The MPs allied to President Uhuru and Raila Odinga, who are in the National Assembly’s Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee are on a mission to draft a bill that creates the position.

The committee seeks to create positions of Prime Minister and two deputy presidents, then have a national referendum to be held alongside the next General Elections.

This move will rekindle the plans to have more members in the executive after it was shuttered through the collapse of BBI.

According to the Committee’s chairperson Jeremiah Kioni, legislators will retreat to Mombasa next week to deliberate on the proposed constitutional amendment.

“We want to have the referendum question included as the seventh ballot paper,” Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni said.

If the bill succeeds, several politicians including 2022 Presidential aspirants will benefit from the creation of extra positions in the executive.

Additionally, a number of Governors who are in their second term are likely to benefit from the arrangement that comes after the collapse of BBI.

Before the nullification of the BBI by the Court of Appeal, the presidential aspirants and second-term governors were hopeful that they will benefit from the constitution amendment which created several leadership positions.

One group that suffered from the collapse of BBI is the One Kenya Alliance that consists of Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) Gideon Moi (KANU) Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetangula(Ford Kenya).

The group had organised itself in a manner that whoever does not clinch the presidential seat benefits from the other positions created by BBI.

Their opponents from Deputy President William Ruto’s camp have been ridiculing the team since the collapse of BBI.

“The reason why you see a lot of anger is because something that was called BBI failed. BBI was the anchor, basis of this outfit called One Kenya Alliance (OKA) and their brothers called ODM” Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro said.
