Interior CS Fred Matiang’i reveals William Ruto has 257 police officers

by Nderi Caren

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on September 1 told Parliament that Deputy President William Ruto has 257 police officers responsible for his security and that of his various properties across the county.

The officers, he said, are distributed across his homes, business premises, offices, and others accompany him everywhere he goes.

While appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and National Security, Matiang’i dismissed claims that DP Ruto’s security is at risk after the change of guard at his home.

“We were not downgrading William Ruto’s security when we made the re-arrangements. The re-arrangement was initiated by the IG for reasons I cannot explain here in public. We informed the DP about the changes as it is routine to do so,” he told the MPs.

He clarified that Ruto has 257 police officers across the country, distributed as follows;

1. 74 Presidential Escort Commandos,5 GSU, 6 DCI, the inner circle

2. 121 Administration Police from Security of Government Buildings and CIPU Units

3. 51 Auxiliary Security deployed in various properties as listed here.

In the parliamentary seating, Fred Matiang’i said that he does not apply political bias when it comes to the security of public figures and VIPs.

“This is routine. Are you going to spend time talking about routine? We are not outlining the law selectively. It comes down to taking moral responsibility as a leader.”

Matiang’i said he is certain about William Ruto’s well-being, refusing to comment on his request to have private security officers from G4S.

“Deputy President William Ruto is not in any danger we have provided him with adequate security. I am not in any position to comment about the request made by him to be guarded by G4S,” he said.

In a hard-hitting banter to the DP, Matiangi accused Ruto of seeking public sympathy from the changes in his security detail.

Before Matiang’i ’s appearance on the parliamentary committee, DP Ruto had asked members of parliament not to waste their time summoning the CS, since the security changes are a non-issue.
