Interior CS: Raila’s attack in Ruto backyard was planned

by Enock Ndayala

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has said that the recent attacks meted on ODM leader Raila Odinga in Rift Valley were well planned.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and National Security on Tuesday, April 5, Matiang’i revealed that the 17 suspects who were nabbed had a lot of KSh 50 notes which were suspected to be from politicians.

According to the Interior CS, it was not coincidental that all the suspects had a lot of cash which were in the same denominations.

“It was planned because we have arrested suspects with a lot of money in KSh 50 notes. Clearly, there must have been some choreography behind that because it’s not coincidental that the suspects had so much money in the same denominations, and some of them were distributing it around that particular time,” Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said.

The Interior boss further noted that the biggest threat the security agencies are facing ahead of the polls is voter bribery which if not tamed might spark similar incidences across the country.

“Politicians are spending money to pay youths and move huge groups of people and ferry others at night. This phenomenon of renting crowds and trying to posture for popularity or what you may call pretended populism is what is actually going to hurt us,” he added.

The former Prime Minister who was addressing locals at Kabenes after attending Mzee Kibor’s burial was attacked in an incident that saw his chopper pelted with stones.

Seventeen youths have since been presented before the court over the incident while area MP Caleb Kostany, his Kapseret counterpart Oscar Sudi and speaker of Uasin Gishu assembly David Kiplagat also recorded statements in Nakuru on the incident.
