Is Ngunjiri Wambugu the most inconsistent politician of recent times?

by Nderi Caren

Nyeri Town MP Ngujiri Wambugu has on more than one occasion come out as a typical politician with no principles but selfish interest presented as principles.

From 2013, when he was at the heart Raila’s presidential campaign think-tank to now, Ngunjiri has changed political stands more than some seasoned politicians.

The political science and philosophy expert was first elected into parliament in the 2017 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Within his one term as a legislator, Ngujiri Wambugu has changed his political affiliations; one day supporting William Ruto, and another day its President Uhuru Kenyatta.

After the 2017 General Election, he was a supporter of the giant Jubilee party alongside Deputy President William Ruto.

He even appeared on a live TV interview where he vowed to support William Ruto’s 2022 presidential ambition. By then, the general narrative was that Ruto would be President Uhuru’s automatic successor.

“A lot of times he says things that people misinterpret to mean what he doesn’t mean, those of us who have gone through him try to clarify and ensure people understand what he says,” Ngujiri Wambugu said about William Ruto in this interview.

Then, the Nyeri Town MP was a staunch opponent of Raila Odinga, warning about his presidency.

“The idea is to stop Raila (Odinga) from being president and I am doing my part. Many of us were Raila insiders, Uhuru, Ruto… once you get to know the guy, you realise that is someone who should not be anywhere near power,” he said.

After the split in Jubilee Party, Ngujiri took sides with President Uhuru Kenyatta and placed himself as a pro-handshake MP.

For this reason, he started supporting Raila Odinga’s presidency, terming him as President Uhuru’s choice.

On September 30, Ngujiri Wambugu was among the Mt Kenya MPs who met Raila Odinga at State House in a bid to kick start popularizing him in the region.

“He committed to respecting our leaders and gave his history, including where he keeps falling out with our region, and how he intends to fix that,

“He also agreed that government projects started but not completed at end of President Uhuru’s term should be finalised,” Wambugu said after meeting with Raila.

The legislator would, later on, give strong hints of joining William Ruto’s camp, saying that the ground has shifted.

“I have been listening to the ground and it’s clear that 2022 is between Raila (Odinga) and (William) Ruto. The questions to determine this election might be in whose hands are we safe?” Nyeri Town MP said in a Facebook post.

This only lasted for a few days, yesterday he withdrew the threat and promised to support Raila Odinga’s presidency.

“I was told that if I make the mistake of leaving Jubilee or stop working with (President) Uhuru Kenyatta I should not dare run for Nyeri Town MP in 2022,” Wambugu said.
